303. "Plymouth is a large sea-port, seated between the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar, and one of the chief naval magazines in the kingdom, owing to its excellent port or harbour, which capable of safely containing 1000 sail. There are, properly speaking, however, three harbours, Catwater, Sutton Pool, and Hamoaze. The first is the mouth of the Plym, and affords a safe and commodious harbour for merchant ships, but is seldom entered by ships of war. The second is frequented by merchant ships only, and is almost surrounded by the houses of the town. The third inlet, which is the mouth of the Tamar, is the harbour for the reception of the British navy. It is defended by a fort on St. Nicholas Island, and other forts, and particularly by a citadel, called the Haw, which overlooks the town, and is a good land- mark for mariners. A floating bridge plies across the Hamoaze. What is called The Dock, is a separate town, situated about two miles up the Hamoaze, and is now nearly as large as Plymouth itself. Here are some spacious docks, solidly built. It has a good herring fishery, and a considerable trade beside its manufactures, which are of all kinds of goods required in shipping; and the great business arising from the dockyard. It is 210 miles from London. Markets, Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday. Population, 37,058." (From Barclay's Complete and Universal English Dictionary, 1842.)

400. The "Ellis Family History" places William as possibly son of William and Mary. However this was stated as just conjecture. The research by R M Pinkham discounts this link and places another William (born 1779, illigitimate) as son of William and Mary. This is the line taken in this work until further evidence is obtained.

420. Bishop William Cyprian Pinkham was born in Newfoundland Nov. 11,1844 but he lived most of his youth in Devon, England. In his early 20's he was sent as a missionary to Red River in Rupert's Land. There he married Jean Drever. In 1881, he was appointed Archdeacon of St. John's Cathedral in Winnipeg and in 1887 he became the Bishop of the district ofSaskatchewan with diocese headquarters in Calgary (Alberta not being a province at the time). When Manitoba's first school act was passed, Bishop Pinkham was appointed to the Provisional Board of Education; as the local representative in Calgary he was made chairman of the Territorial Board of Education. Soon after Bishop Pinkham came to Calgary, the Diocese of Saskatchewan was divided and he became the Bishop of Calgary. He held that position until he retired. He and his wife were known for their charitable and untiring work in education and health care. He was considered one of early Alberta's religious "Big Three", the other two being Father Lacombe and Reverend John McDougall. Source: "Calgary Cavalcade" by Grant MacEwan

554. J Pinkham, App Cert 4670, This assumes that the James Pinkham referred to in the Lloyds registers is James, son of Thomas and Elizabeth and not James, son of William and Grace.
555. In the 1851 census there is an entry for a James Pinkham (age 24) born in Stokeinteignhead, staying at "Picket Barracks", Stoke Damerel, with his wife Harriet Pinkham (age 24). It is possible that this is the James, son of Thomas and Elizabeth. However, at present, it is equally likely to relate to James, son of William and Grace. This is also true of the Master Mariner records.
